What is Data Migration?
Data migration is the controlled transfer of data from one system or cloud to another, including planning, tooling, security controls, change management, and post-cutover validation. Typical scenarios include Microsoft 365 adoption, tenant to tenant moves during M&A, file-server to SharePoint transitions, SQL workloads to Azure, and virtual machine re-platforming. For Microsoft workloads we use first-party tooling such as Azure Migrate, SharePoint Migration Tool and supported cross-tenant mailbox moves.

Discover and Assess
Inventory sources, volumes, item types, permissions, compliance flags, and dependencies. For Microsoft estates we profile readiness with Azure Migrate and native assessment tooling.

Design and Plan
Define the target architecture, identity and access model, licensing, retention and sensitivity labelling, and the migration pattern: cutover for small teams, or phased with delta sync for larger sites.

Prepare
Remediate data quality issues, map permissions, stand up coexistence where required, pilot with champions, and schedule non-disruptive windows. SPMT and Migration Manager prerequisites are validated up-front.

Migrate
Execute bulk and delta passes, monitor throughput, handle exceptions, and communicate progress. Azure Migrate and supported ISVs provide progress telemetry and throttling controls.

Validate and Cutover
Verify item counts, checksums, and permissions; complete application smoke tests; switch DNS or app endpoints; and run a hypercare window.

Decommission and Handover
Retire legacy systems safely, transfer runbooks, and train admins and users.
